Planted in 2008 on bare pasture by fourth-generation South Islander Freddy Davison, the 20-hectare Ward Valley Estate vineyard sits in Marlborough’s southern Awatere. I’m Charlie O’Brien, the “Noisemaker” behind Silent Noise. I grew up at Kangarilla Road Winery, surrounded by the chaos of vintage—tractors, trucks, and barrels—which sparked my love for winemaking. The name Silent Noise reflects this contrast: the buzz of the vineyard and the quiet anticipation of a bottled wine waiting to burst to life on the nose and palate.

From topping barrels at age three to working with producers like Gemtree, Yangarra, and even Château Haut-Bailly in Bordeaux, my journey’s been hands-on and heartfelt. I believe great wine starts in the vineyard—with respect, care, and exceptional fruit.

Monowai is a family-owned vineyard and winery in Crownthorpe, Hawke’s Bay, handcrafting boutique, cool-climate wines from a single 22-hectare site. Founded by New Zealand winemaker Emma Lowe and Chilean vineyard manager Marcelo Nunez, Monowai was the first family-run winery in this emerging district.

Drawn to the cooler, higher-altitude terrain near the Kaweka Ranges, Emma and Marcelo planted their vineyard along the Ngaruroro River, where they live and work today. With global winemaking experience—from Chile to Switzerland—they focus entirely on estate-grown fruit, producing wines that reflect the purity and promise of this unique Hawke’s Bay location.

The name Coal Pit honours the area’s history, where early pioneers sourced coal from nearby mountain ranges. Our flagship Pinot Noir, ‘Tiwha’, is a tribute to founder Rosie’s late father. Lauren Swift was crowned New Zealand’s first Young Winemaker of the Year at just 25. Raised on a Marlborough orchard, her love of grapes began early—learning to grow (and pick) them on nearby vineyards. A European gap year sparked her winemaking journey, leading to a role at Clos Henri and a Wine Science degree at EIT.

After vintages in California and the Rhône, Lauren returned home to launch Swift Wines in 2016 with husband Henry. Together, they’ve built a family-run label fuelled by passion, play, and a whole lot of wine. They believe in big dreams—and balancing them with a full glass.

The Brennan family’s New Zealand story began in 1877, arriving from Ireland aboard the SS Otaki. Sean Brennan’s father, Dr. Sir Murray Brennan, was born in Auckland and studied at Otago, always drawn to the rugged beauty of Central Otago. The family first bought land in the region in the 1970s, and in 1994, they established their vineyard in Gibbston—among the area’s pioneers. With some of the first vines in the valley, they’ve never looked back, building a legacy rooted in history, passion, and a deep connection to the land.
